Sharron Jones: Keeping production on track

Discover the role of Sharron, our Production Coordinator.

Get to know me

Hi everyone! I’m Sharron Jones, and if you don’t know me already… where have you been hiding? 😊

I joined Oadby Plastics back in 1987 on a YTS scheme, yes, before emails, mobiles, and probably half the machinery we use today. In that time, I’ve raised three children, seen the company grow massively, and I’m still here, which tells you everything you need to know about how much Oadby means to me.

How it all started

I began my journey at Oadby doing general office duties. I was the first face you saw at reception, the voice on the phone, and the person typing invoices on a typewriter (yes, the kind you now only see in museums!).

Oadby was much smaller then, but even at that stage, it felt like home.

As the company grew and moved to Leicester, so did my role. I joined the accounts team, where I spent many years as things got busier and busier. Then in 2019, I decided it was time to challenge myself and try something completely different… so naturally, I moved into Health & Safety. 😂

Health & Safety era

In H&S, no two days were the same, and that’s exactly what I loved. I trained, gained my IOSH qualification, dealt with issues, solved problems, and kept everyone on their toes and safe.

It definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone, but in the best possible way.

But I wasn’t done yet.

Production life (plot twist!)

In October 2022, I moved into a brand-new role for the company: Production Coordinator, not the obvious next step, but the right one.

It honestly felt like everything I’d done up to that point had been leading me here.

This role brings together everything, organisation, communication, problem-solving, and people skills – all while keeping production running smoothly. If something needs sorting, chasing, or untangling, I usually find myself right in the middle of it.

I’ll admit, being the only female in production at the time came with a bit of a learning curve, but I jumped straight in and embraced it. It’s great to see more women now coming through the teams.

Since then, I’ve learned about machinery, tooling, processes, SOPs, audits, suppliers, customers, training compliance, and plenty more. As my manager says, “every day’s a school day”, and at this rate, I should have a few extra qualifications by now!

So… what does my day actually look like?

No two days are ever the same (which is exactly how I like it), but a typical day might include:

  • Checking work orders and lead times from the previous day
  • Making sure maintenance and machine checks are completed
  • Reviewing what jobs are due out
  • Looking at daily figures and open credits
  • Investigating queries for management
  • Ordering uniforms for all branches (fashion icon, obviously)
  • Ordering tooling and consumables
  • Producing summary figures for the technical team
  • Reviewing training and compliance
  • Handling emails from sales
  • Taking calls about… absolutely everything

Some days are organised, some are organised chaos, but either way, everything gets done.

A big part of my role is working closely with sales, operations, and technical teams to keep everything running as smoothly as possible.

Projects & planning

I’ve been involved in several major projects, some lasting over a year, including one where I sourced 60,000 consumables, negotiated pricing, coordinated deliveries, and scheduled production right down to the minute.

It takes a lot of planning, organisation, and constant checking, but that’s exactly the kind of challenge I thrive on.

Why Oadby?

I genuinely love working at Oadby Plastics. This has been my only job and honestly, I don’t see that ever changing.

I feel valued, appreciated, and part of something genuinely special.

People often ask why I’ve never gone elsewhere to “try something new”, and my answer is simple, why would I? Everything I need is right here.

Anyone who knows me will tell you, I’m Oadby through and through, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

A few quick facts about me

  • Tea or coffee? Coffee
  • Favourite part of the job? Keeping everything running smoothly and helping people (although if you ask my manager… he’ll probably say it’s him!)
  • How would I describe my personality? Fun, witty, kind, and social, I genuinely care about people, will always try to help, and like to see the best in everyone
  • If I wasn’t at Oadby? Honestly… I can’t picture it!
