Meet Jack Tipper

Discover the role our Quality & Environmental Manager plays at Oadby Plastics.

Who is Jack?

Hi, I’m Jack, the Quality & Environmental Manager here at Oadby Plastics. I’ve been here for four years now, but previously I worked for a multinational building materials company. For many years, I worked in admixture production (chemical additives that enhance concrete’s characteristics and performance) before switching to concrete design, testing, and quality control. Soon after gaining my qualifications in concrete technology and construction, I decided I needed a new challenge and wanted to pursue a management career.
An interesting opportunity at Oadby for a QA Manager appeared, and after researching the company, it sounded like the kind of place I wanted to be. I knew the job would provide a fantastic opportunity to broaden my experience and learn plenty of new skills- and I got it!

What does your role involve?

My role has evolved to meet the needs and the direction of the business, so it’s a pretty broad job description! It’s not quite the cliché of “no two days are the same”, but my role is really varied and, very briefly, includes things like:

• Keeping our ISO management system running smoothly and improving it as we go, while working with the wider team to build better processes

• Handling internal and external audits, making sense of the findings, and helping reduce risk across the business

• Coming up with and rolling out sustainability ideas that cut our environmental impact (and often save costs too)

• Supporting our branches and sister companies to make sure we’re all meeting company and legal standards

• Offering advice across the business on things like product compliance, legislation, quality, and environmental improvements

I’m proud to be involved in and lead on so many interesting projects. Recently, I’ve been involved in everything from building a new customer feedback process to completely overhauling our document control system. We’ve also rolled out new SOPs and improved how we communicate and train them across the business, simplified our energy procurement process, and much more!

In 2026, I’m helping to continue our momentum by:

• Working with our suppliers to reduce packaging waste
• Re-evaluating our waste streams internally to improve our recycling rate
• Introducing solar battery storage systems
• Increasing our solar generation capacity
• Introducing a whole load of amazing products to our sustainable products range

Our main initiative has been, and continues to be, improving our waste and energy management. We’ve done so well over the past few years (as you might have seen on our socials!), but we always want to do better by improving our processes and investing in technology. These areas have such a huge environmental and cost impact, so I’m glad that my work influences our stability and sustainability long-term.

What key skills and expertise do you bring to the role?

A role like mine requires drive and a genuine desire to affect how the whole company succeeds and grows. It demands a proactive mindset, patience, and a sensitive, diplomatic approach to working with other departments to enact change where it’s needed. My role suits those with an eye for detail and a respect for processes, uniformity, and consistency. And like pretty much every job out there, you must be able to call on enthusiasm you didn’t know you had, to get on with work that can be… challenging.

I’ve found that in my role, I rely lots on good data, whether it’s from spreadsheets I build or from insightful dashboards developed by IT, as it’s hard to make good decisions without that information.

I’m also finding myself using AI more (👉 I promise there’s no AI in this blog – just plenty of human writing to delve into), as much as I kind of don’t like to admit it… Though I’m not giving up creative thinking, I’m just using it more for research, proofreading, and summarising large documents, etc.

What do you enjoy about the role?

I actually find it really rewarding to get out and work with so many great people. I enjoy helping others in general, so I’m lucky that my role engages with lots of people across the group. Naturally, I love it when I see change come into effect that was my idea, that I pushed for, and that has a positive and lasting impact on Oadby and beyond.

Any final thoughts?

My experience so far in this role and at Oadby Plastics more broadly has been positive. It hasn’t all been easy, but if it were, it probably wouldn’t be as rewarding. I’ve met brilliant people, done great work that I’m proud of, learnt a lot of new skills, grown as a manager, and discovered more about myself.
I’m excited about the future at Oadby. There’s a lot more we can achieve, particularly for the circular economy, the lifecycle of our products, and for our brilliant customers, and we’re in a strong position to do it. The company has also progressed more for us as employees, and I believe it will continue to do so.
